Inside Track
Ady Smith
What do you do for a living?
I’ve just started a new job as an Operational Systems Consultant having briefly retired from the Royal Air Force after 38 years’ service as an Aircraft Technician and Navigator.
How long have you been running with EGRC?
I joined in March 2017 ahead of attempting my first half marathon later that year
What do you enjoy most about running?
Being able to eat and drink almost anything guilt free
How do you spend the rest of your spare time?
Spoiling my granddaughter, road and mountain cycling, maintaining a small fleet of cycles and tinkering with classic cars.
What is your favourite food?
I was fortune enough to live and work in Naples for 2 years, so it has to be Italian
Do you have a favourite race/event/distance? If so tell us about it.
Favourite distance has to be 10K, not too fast and not too long. Favourite race is DHHM, brutal but the ultimate challenge.
Where is the best place you have ever run?
Two unusual races I’ve done are the Vesuvius 10k (yes all uphill) and the Rock Race in Gibraltar (uphill again). However, it has to be Bristol for sheer diversity and access to all manner of running routes.
What is top of your bucket list?
I’ve been oscillating wildly for a few years but a marathon of some description - if I ever pull my finger out and start training properly
What is the best or worst thing about running during a global pandemic?
The best was the lack of traffic giving a new dimension to running routes, the worst was the extra people on some of the usual running routes and the lack of races to challenge oneself.
Describe what running means to you in 3 words.
