Social News

Hope you all had a very happy Easter. Onto social stuff…….with the world isolating, social events have been a bit thin on the ground lately. However, running club members are an inventive and creative lot and a bit of isolation is not going to stop us socialising.

With the EGRC Charity Easter Quiz postponed, Danny Smith came to the rescue with his Quiz Night (being held every Thursday evening at 6.30pm – definitely check it out if you haven’t done so already!)

On quiz launch night, Team Dunn registered their interest (Danny sends a link on the #TeamEGRC Facebook page beforehand) and settled down to play. The whole family gathered but it was touch and go as we were still trying to figure out how to view Danny on the telly (via Youtube) with only a minute to spare. With seconds to go, one of the teenagers in the house took the controls and figured out the technology and we welcomed the sight of Danny into our lounge.

There followed four sections of quite difficult questions about movies - a lot of them around Sci-Fi from the 1980s – fortunately one of my specialist areas! Despite some first-time glitches, Danny was able to total each section and let us know who was doing well and who was doing not so well. It was good to hear some of the incorrect answers but it was even better to hear the different names of those playing, making us feel connected despite being in lockdown. There was a quick break to run outside and clap for the NHS (we could hear the clapping all around us – well done neighbours) and then back for more from our ace quizmaster.

We wrapped up at around 8.10pm with Team Dunn coming a very surprising second place. Danny has fine-tuned the technology and the quiz is now bigger, better and pretty slick including picture rounds and easy scoring. Give it a go next Thursday – it starts at 7pm and is usually finished by 7.45pm.  Check out the Facebook page for more detail.

On Saturday evening, around 16 households enjoyed a virtual Karaoke party night, courtesy of DJ Nelly (aka our very own Club Chairman Neil Newman). There was an assortment of weird and wonderful fancy dress and quite a lot of alcohol being consumed – the DJ called time at around 11.15pm after a flood of requests, ending with the classic Valerie which was murdered by the whole group. A very good evening with lots of laughter – if you didn’t manage to join the karaoke bar this time around, I’m sure it will open again in a few weeks.

Hot of the press: Steve’s ‘Burgie Bingo night’ - a date for this has been set for Monday 20th April - look out for more info on the #Team EGRC FB page.

Keep on running!
